└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
│ │
│ "Beat Biter" is MC Shan's classic cut (never before reissued) │
│ where he accuses LL Cool J of stealing his beat for "Rock The │
│ Bells". He calls out LL at the top of the cut, but even if it │
│ wasn't clear who he's talking about, Marley Marl cuts in a │
│ sample of Foghorn Leghorn saying "I think we know who that │
│ somebody is..." The beats are, of course, similar to LL's "Rock │
│ The Bells", the verses are some of the best mid-80's battle │
│ rhymes, and the extended version has some nice scratching by │
│ Marly Marl. And then there's the b-side... If you appreciate │
│ BDP's "South Bronx", you've gotta hear this one. If ya don't │
│ know... MC Shan recorded "The Bridge", saying hip hop started │
│ in Queensbridge, Queens. BDP replied with "South Bronx", │
│ setting the record straight (as we see it). "South Bronx" uses │
│ the same beat and replies to "The Bridge" almost line for line. │
│ MC Shan then replied with "Kill That Noise" -- followed by the │
│ final word from BDP with "The Bridge Is Over". Shan's first │
│ single was "Feed The World" on MCA (which explains KRS's line │
│ "You got dropped off MCA, cuz the rhymes you wrote was wack" on │
│ "South Bronx"). We won't even begin with the other entries in │
│ the Queens/Bronx battle like MC Poet's "Beat You Down", which │
│ was directed at KRS. (MC Poet later became a member of │
│ Screwball.) And you thought the Jay Z/Nas/Mobb Deep/etc. │
│ battles went on too long! All the hip hop history contained on │
│ these tracks and all that trivia aside, the record is still up │
│ there as one of our favorites from the class of '85. (Reissued │
│ with the same mixes and the same label art as the original │
│ pressing.) --dustygroove │
